PKDW parents ran a pumpkin patch, plant and water bottle sale and PTA parents sold lemonade and decorate-your-own or already frosted Halloween cupcakes to raise money for both schools. Meanwhile, the 4th & 5th graders were busy selling “Gold Rush Popcorn” while customers “panned for gold” to raise funds for their February overnight to Coloma. We raised over $2000 and more importantly, everyone had a great time working together and showcasing our two schools. Plans are already in the works to make next year’s event even bigger!
Back to School BBQ2009’s Back To School BBQ was especially exciting as DW participated in Chalk4Peace. On the same day, at hundreds of authorized sites on four continents, students chalked their messages and visions for peace. Chalk4Peace is not an anti-war demonstration, but a creative outlet for artists of all ages utilizing the theme of peace. DW was proud to be a part of this acclaimed international program. Black History CelebrationFebruary is Black History month. Curriculum on the achievements of African Americans and their history is taught througout the month, culminating in a festive music and food-filled celebration. With the election of Barack Obama, America's first black President, Black History month this year should especially meaningful.
Peace WalkEvery March, staff, students and DW families join with Starr King Elementary and ISA High School to chant for peace throughout Potrero Hill. By encouraging harmony starting in our own neighborhood, we hope to bring it to the world at large.
International FestivalDW’s International Festival is a fun-filled evening featuring dinner, a fundraising raffle and a student talent show. Students audition to participate and take pride in polishing their acts to perform for a packed auditorium of family and friends.
